HOW WERE YOU FIRST INTRODUCED TO THIS  TYPE OF WORK/ARTISTIC PRACTICE - AND WHAT DID YOU ENJOY ABOUT YOUR EARLY  EXPLORATION OF IT?

I first dove into the medium about 10 years ago while I was studying and an internship with Collis Studios set in motion my dream to pursue ceramics as a practice. I loved the way the material transforms during the making process and I was excited by the many possibilities that it offered to explore form, surface texture and pattern.

I really enjoy the experience of working with clay, and keeping connected to the material by working with my hands. It's really special when you get into a state of flow with a piece that you're working on, purely focused on the making. That comes with learning the material and understanding each part of the process to get the timing just right. Sometimes it means taking a moment to slow down and stay in tune with the clay.

HOW HAS YOUR WORK/ARTISTIC PRACTICE CHANGED AND DEVELOPED OVER THE YEARS? WHAT FACTORS DO YOU THINK AFFECTED THIS?

I’m currently exploring forms that capture light and shadow on the surface of my works. I’m interested in how the light shifts and shadows move around the work, giving the piece different qualities when viewed throughout the day. I’m also becoming more aware of using local materials and creating works that are of this place, using wild clay dug from our property. It instills that close connection to the material and the land which is really important to me.

When I first graduated I developed a range of functional ceramics, thinking that my  practice would be more design focused. But what I really loved making was more sculptural objects, with hand-carved patterns on the surface. I loved working with porcelain and its translucent qualities. In 2015 I undertook a residency at the European Ceramic Work Centre in The Netherlands, and this was a crucial time to re-think my practice and explore new possibilities and ways of making. Since I have been back in my own studio my work has continued to evolve, but the inspiration I draw from the natural environment has been the constant theme.  

In 2017, I co-founded Kaolin, an online ceramics store, with fellow potter Rachel Carter. We saw an opportunity to connect with other local potters and share their work, promoting the concept of ‘enhancing everyday rituals’ through the use and enjoyment of beautifully crafted handmade ceramics. I think that this theme has been especially important during the unpredictability of this year, turning our focus inwards towards the home and enjoying the simple things like preparing a meal.

PLEASE DESCRIBE WHERE YOU WORK FROM? WHAT DO YOU FIND SPECIAL ABOUT LIVING OUT WEST? 

I work in a little slice of paradise: a garden studio at my home nestled on the edge of the Waitakere Ranges. I have a view out to the native bush, and the valley beyond. I derive a lot of my inspiration from the natural environment, so it is really special to be able to work in a place that is so deeply connected to nature. We’re so lucky to have so many special places right on our doorstep. A trip to Te Henga / Bethells beach is always a great source of inspiration. I’m always photographing the patterns left in the black volcanic sand by the outgoing tide, and thinking of new ways to incorporate these details into my work.

WHAT CAN VISITORS EXPECT TO SEE WHEN  THEY VISIT YOUR STUDIO DURING OSW?  

I am really excited to be hosting visitors at my studio during the Open Studio’s weekend. My aim is that it will give an inspiring behind the scenes look at how I craft my work in my studio and an insight into my creative practice. I will have a range of my work displayed, from works in progress to finished objects, one-of-a-kind pieces and functional items. We will be serving coffee all day and will have some drinks available in the afternoon to keep everyone’s energy up for visiting all the other amazing studios!
